About chef Yun

I left Korea and have made the UK my home for over 20 years. Cooking has always been my passion, and my mum was my inspiration.

Thich Nhat Hanh once said, "Love is the capacity to take care, to protect and to nourish." Cooking has always been how love is shown in my family and in my culture, and I'm happy to carry on that legacy and share it with like-minded people.

I started out as a humble chef to support myself while studying art in London, and worked my way up to head chef in event catering, at venues such as the National Gallery, the V&A and the Royal Academy of Arts.

After I had my two children, I became a development chef specialising in Asian food. Working in retail as a creative cook was hugely rewarding. It was a team effort, but seeing my dishes on the shelves of M&S, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Tesco was an exciting time.

Food has taught me a lot about people and about life. I'm fascinated by how the humble act of cooking and sharing can touch people in so many ways.

Today I make SSUG kimchi, sauces and seasonings in small batches, and welcome people to Understory House for cooking classes and Yun's Table.

We all carry food stories and memories in our hearts. I'd love to hear yours. Find me on Instagram at @kimchiguru.yun.
